The Gooseberry Sawfly (Nematus ribesii) - This caterpillar is not a true one but the larva of a sawfly species (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae). Compared to the caterpillar of Lepidoptera, the larva of sawfly can have six or more prolegs (abdomen) and it has only two simple eyes (six in true caterpillars). This species is a common pest for the redcurrant. Larvae eat leaves, sometimes up to a total defoliation.
